The Mad Turkey Farm was founded by Katja Kukovic, who has had a lifelong passion for saving animals. Early in life, she rescued mostly cats and dogs, but in 2003, she rescued her first farm animal, a retired racehorse named Lucas. This spurred a love for rescuing horses. Soon after, she rescued another ex-racehorse, Damask, who was destined for a Canadian slaughterhouse, followed by two more unwanted horses, who were marked for euthanasia.
As our stable expanded, so did our need for space. We purchased our farm in Northern Virginia in 2014, and have been saving farm animals and providing them with forever homes here ever since. In addition to our love of retired racehorses, we’re also passionate about saving unwanted roosters (we have a large bachelor flock), broilers/meat chickens, and senior laying hens.
But we welcome all types of neglected and unwanted farm animals. We have rescued and provided permanent homes for a range of animals, including horses (nine total on the farm), pigs, dogs, cats, ducks, geese, and one mad turkey. Thank you for your interest in our rescue!
